Subclass 457 Long Stay Business Visa

The Subclass 457 visa is a long stay business visa permitting temporary stay in Australia from a minimum of three months to a maximum of four years.

Sponsoring overseas employees is a three-stage process:

  1. Application for approval as a business sponsor
  2. Nomination of an overseas employee for a specific position
  3. Lodgement of a visa application by the overseas employee.

Approval as a business sponsor

To approve an employer as a business sponsor, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will assess each business' capacity to meet its regulations and sponsorship undertakings.

Nomination application

The nomination must be for a fulltime skilled position, which is paid a minimum annual base salary of $41850, based on a 38 hour week. Concessions are available for positions in regional areas.

Visa application

The employee needs to show that they have the necessary skills/experience and qualifications to work in the nominated position. If English is not the employee's first language, they will be required to show they have at least 'functional' English - usually confirmed by the IELTS English test results.
