Temporary residence gives the person the right to live and/or work in Australia for a limited time.

Some of the common temporary resident visa categories are:


Business (Long Stay) Visa


This visa caters for business entry up to four years for:

  • Personnel (executives, managers and specialists) from companies operating in Australia
  • Personnel from offshore companies seeking to establish a branch in Australia, participate in joint ventures, or fulfil a contract awarded to an offshore company
  • Personnel coming under a labour or regional headquarters agreement.

Retirement Visa

The retirement visa is for people aged 55 years and over, who wish to retire in Australia. Retirees must have a certain level of assets and income available for transfer to Australia. They are also required to make a designated investment with the relevant state/territory government. The amount of assets/income and designated investment varies if the applicant will be living in a regional area.


Student Visa

This is a temporary visa available to overseas students of all ages wishing to come into Australia for education purposes.
