Fighting Spam

The Federal Government's recent review of the SPAM Act 2003, reported that enforcement measures have reduced Australia from 10th to 23rd  of the world's top sources of SPAM (electronic junkmail).

This Act prohibits sending bulk or individual commercial electronic message without the consent of the addressee via email, short message service (SMS), multimedia message service (MMS) or instant messaging.

Key recommendations from the review include:

  • Partnerships with other countries to reduce SPAM from overseas;
  • Clarifying the application of the Act to commercial messages and factual information messages, which may be exempt; and
  • Extending the Act to faxes.
